A Prayer That Starts With “How Long?”

Some prayers do not start with confidence. They start with a sigh.

“How long, Lord?”

Psalm 13 begins that way. David feels forgotten. He is worn down, carrying sorrow, and looking at a situation that has not changed. He does not clean up his words before he comes to God. He simply tells the truth.

That is a helpful place to begin.

Sometimes faith is not a strong speech. Sometimes it is opening the Bible when the heart feels tired. Sometimes it is saying, “Lord, I do not know what to do with this. Please help me.”

David’s circumstances do not suddenly disappear by the end of Psalm 13. But he remembers who God is: faithful, loving, and worthy of trust. The struggle is still real, yet it is no longer the only thing in view.

Paul writes something similar in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It is often used like a declaration of personal confidence—like believers can accomplish whatever they set their minds to do. But Paul is talking about something deeper. He has known hunger and plenty, need and abundance, hardship and provision. His strength is not coming from himself. It is Christ’s strength that meets him in every season.

That is what we need too.

Following Jesus does not mean pretending that hard things are easy. It means learning, little by little, that His strength is enough when ours is not. The answer may not come as quickly as hoped. The burden may still feel heavy. But Christ is present, and He does not leave His people to carry it alone.

So bring Him the honest prayer.

“How long, Lord?”

Then keep reading. Keep asking. Keep trusting the One whose strength holds you when your own runs out.
